Formed in Christ for Faithful Teaching and Learning

The Center for Faith and Learning exists to deepen Indiana Wesleyan University’s (IWU) foundational commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord of all creation. This commitment is living, active, and essential to the university’s academic mission today.

The Center serves IWU faculty and co-curricular educators by forming them for faithful Christian academic vocation. Through teaching, scholarship, service, and mentoring, faculty participate in Christ’s redemptive work by shaping the intellectual and spiritual life of the university.

Faculty formation is not merely professional development. It is discipleship. Educators are created by God and called by Christ to love God with heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to order their academic work toward faithful service in the Church and the world.

Integrating Christian Faith
and Academic Life

The integration of Christian faith and learning is the keystone that holds together IWU’s academic identity. Every discipline, every classroom, and every scholarly pursuit stands under the authority of Christ.

The Center for Faith and Learning exists to drive this conviction deeper and make it more explicit through sustained theological reflection and scholarly engagement shaped by Scripture, Christian tradition, and the Wesleyan-Holiness heritage.

How the Center Serves
the IWU Community

The Center supports faculty and co-curricular educators through sustained, theologically rich formation experiences that cultivate Christian wisdom, vocational clarity, and scholarly faithfulness.

New Faculty Formation

The New Faculty Class provides a dedicated space for discernment and reflection on the Christian academic vocation. Participants engage Scripture, Christian tradition, and Wesleyan-Holiness theology as they explore how faith shapes teaching, research, service, and life in the Church. This seminar affirms academic excellence while calling educators to faithful obedience to Christ. The New Faculty Class represents the core of an evolving faculty formation sequence, with additional development under consideration.

Common Learning Theme Programming

All Center programming is anchored in the Common Learning Theme, The Christian Imagination, a multi-year initiative spanning the 2025–26 and 2026–27 academic years. Through lectures, performances, reading groups, and scholarly conversations, faculty explore how Christian imagination shapes intellectual life, artistic expression, and faithful engagement with the world.

Selected Programming Highlights

Beginning in Fall 2025, Common Learning Theme programming has included faculty and community engagement surrounding The Christian Imagination, a campus visit and conversation with Lanta Davis, performances and scholarly reflection connected to George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, and interdisciplinary reading groups and lectures. Additional programming continues throughout the academic year.

Faculty Conversations and Visiting Scholars

Faculty engage in lectures, forums, book discussions, and facilitated conversations designed to foster rigorous inquiry under the lordship of Christ. The Center also welcomes visiting scholars whose work exemplifies faithful Christian scholarship and contributes to Christian higher education.

Todd has contributed over 200 articles, editorials, interviews, and reviews to a wide variety of journals, magazines, and newspapers

The Center for Faith and Learning is housed within the Office of Academic Affairs at IWU, underscoring the centrality of faith and learning to the academic mission of the institution.

Dr. Todd Ream serves as the Center’s inaugural director, bringing extensive experience and a deep commitment to cultivating faithful, Christ-centered academic communities.
