Faculty Formation in Christian Academic Vocation

The New Faculty Class serves as a primary formation experience for educators new to Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU). The class provides a structured space for discernment and reflection concerning the theological commitments that define the Christian academic vocation as expressed through teaching, service, and research.

At IWU, these commitments reflect the Church’s stewardship of historic Christian orthodoxy and the contributions of the Wesleyan-Holiness theological tradition. Through shared reading, conversation, and reflection, faculty are invited to consider how Christian faith orders their intellectual work and vocational life.

Relationship to the Center for Faith and Learning

The New Faculty Class is coordinated through the Center for Faith and Learning and represents a foundational expression of the Center’s commitment to forming educators for faithful service in Christian higher education.

Cultivating Virtue Together

Purpose of the New Faculty Class

In addition to cultivating collegiality among faculty new to the university, the class offers a venue for sustained reflection on:

  • The nature of Christian academic vocation
  • The practices that form faithful teaching, service, and scholarship
  • The virtues most important to cultivate in academic life
  • The vices that require attention and correction
  • The role of the Church in shaping intellectual and vocational formation

The New Faculty Class meets weekly during the Spring 2026 semester.

Location: Barnes Student Center, Academic Affairs Office, Conference Room

Time: Tuesdays, 3:30–5:00 p.m.

Coordinator: Todd Ream

The New Faculty Class represents the core of an evolving faculty formation sequence, with additional development under consideration as part of the Center’s long-term vision.

The New Faculty Class meets in the Barnes Student Center, Academic Affairs Office (Conference Room.) 

 

Participants engage selected works that address calling, vocation, and Christian teaching, including:

  • Gary M. Burge, Mapping Your Academic Career
  • Arianna Molloy, Healthy Calling
  • David I. Smith, On Christian Teaching

Faculty participate through:

  • Weekly reading and discussion
  • A Christian academic vocation interview with a senior scholar at another institution
  • A reflective paper articulating a theological understanding of Christian academic vocation

These practices encourage thoughtful integration of Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience as illuminated by the Holy Spirit.
